College Football Best Bets: The ACC Owns Noon
Two ACC games kick at the same minute Saturday, and both come down to the same thing: offenses that move the chains against defenses that can't get anybody into third-and-long. Virginia Tech travels to Boston College, and Wake Forest visits Louisville. Here's the breakdown on both.

Third-and-Short All Afternoon
Boston College needed a fourth-quarter stand to beat Maine 22-16 last week. I repeat - Maine. Now it hosts a Virginia Tech team that just went into College Park and threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-26 win that ended Maryland's 20-game non-conference win streak. V-Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has thrown for 327 and 314 in back-to-back wins, and the offense he's running ranks 8th in the country in adjusted efficiency, 12th in available yards, 14th on third down at 57%. BC's defense is the wrong kind of defense to slow that: it lets opponents into third-and-5.9 on average, 130th in the nation, and it gives up explosive plays at the 118th-ranked rate. A team that converts 57% of its third downs against a defense that keeps handing out short ones is how the Hokies scored 35 on Maryland, and it's how they score 35 here.
The Nation's Best Pass Rush vs. a 118th-Ranked Offense
Then there's the part of this matchup that actually makes it a two-touchdown game. Virginia Tech's front seven is the most disruptive in college football: first in havoc, first in front-seven havoc, and a sack rate of 15.7% that's second nationally. Boston College's offense ranks 118th, can't throw it (119th in passing efficiency), and converts just 35% of its third downs (126th) while giving up havoc at a 100th-ranked clip. BC signal caller Mason McKenzie has been sacked and chased all season, and he's about to face a pass rush that's better than anything Cincinnati brought in BC's 34-15 Week 1 sebtack.
Best Bet
BC's two wins are over Rutgers and an FCS team, by seven and six. Tech's offense is top-10, its pass rush is number one, and the Eagles have no answer for either. 35-17. Lay it.

Fourth-Worst Third-Down Distance in the Country
Wake Forest's defense lets opponents face third-and-5.6 on average. That's the fourth-worst number in college football, and it tells you everything about how this game goes: Louisville is going to move the chains all afternoon. The Deacons rank 129th in success rate allowed, 129th against the run, 128th on early downs, and their secondary creates almost nothing (130th in DB havoc). Now they meet an offense that ranks 8th in the country in adjusted efficiency, 12th passing, 20th rushing, and 6th on early downs. Cardinals QB Lincoln Kienholz has put 38 on Ole Miss and 41 on SMU in his first two career starts. Louisville's two games against FBS teams have produced 79 and 72 points.
Neither Defense Can Get a Stop
What makes this an over instead of a Louisville team total is the other defense. The Cardinals' unit ranks 93rd overall, 106th against the pass, 115th in available yards allowed, and it can't rush the passer, posting a 2.7% sack rate that ranks 126th in the country. Wake's offense is better than its 2-1 record suggests: 36th in efficiency, 32nd running the ball, 31st in points per drive, with QB Gio Lopez coming off a game where he kept Wake within 33-20 of the fifth-ranked team (Miami) in the country. Against a defense that gave Ole Miss 41 and SMU 31, this offense gets to 24 without anything unusual happening.

Louisville 38, Wake 24 is 62. Two offenses that can score, two defenses that can't get anyone into third-and-long. Noon kick, over it.
