We're finally down to the final 16 teams, and this round kicks off with about as much American symbolism as a soccer match can carry. Philadelphia, one of the key cities behind the Declaration of Independence, is hosting a Round of 16 game on July 4, which happens to be the 250th anniversary of that document's signing. France and Paraguay get the honor of playing in front of that backdrop, with a quarterfinal spot on the line.

France's Attack Has Been Unstoppable
I don't think there's much of a case against France as the most dangerous attacking team left in this tournament. Les Bleus are averaging 8.5 shots on target per match, a mark that's well clear of Germany and Canada, who are tied for second at 7.0.
Against Sweden in the Round of 32, France put up 12 shots on target and 25 shots overall, their highest single game shot total at a World Cup since they faced Paraguay in the 1998 Round of 16. Kylian Mbappé has been at the center of it all, scoring in every match this tournament, while Michael Olise has quietly racked up five assists playing alongside him.
Paraguay, on the other hand, ranks at the bottom of the remaining field in nearly every attacking category, including total shots and shots on target. Realistically, their path forward means sitting deep, staying compact, and hoping to make the most of a rare transition chance or set piece, the same low block approach that got them through the group stage and past Germany in the Round of 32.
Gill Has Given Paraguay a Fighting Chance
That kind of defensive setup puts a heavy workload on goalkeeper Orlando Gill, and so far he's answered the call. Against Germany in the Round of 32, Gill made six saves in regulation and extra time as Paraguay absorbed 21 shots across 120 minutes, then added two more stops in the penalty shootout to send the Germans home. That was enough to make him a national hero and earn him Superior Player of the Match.
The Germany performance is probably the ceiling, but I think the more useful comparison for this matchup is Paraguay's group stage meeting with the United States. Like France, the USA plays with pace and directness in transition, and that game produced 16 total shots and 6 shots on target for the Americans in a 4-1 win. It's a smaller scale version of the kind of quick, athletic pressure Paraguay is about to face again, just with even more overall quality on France's side. Between the France style volume Sweden saw and the USA style transition speed Paraguay has already had to defend, I like Gill for another heavy workload between the posts.
He's now played in front of a worldwide audience twice in this tournament and has already drawn transfer interest from clubs like Lazio, Torino, Valencia and Besiktas because of it. Another big performance against Mbappé and company on the Fourth of July would only add to that.
The Bet
France should control possession and territory for long stretches, and Paraguay's setup all but guarantees they'll spend most of the match camped in their own box. Put France's shot volume together with Paraguay's low block, and I think it adds up to another busy day for Gill.
