Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2026 Betting Preview

Marcus Freeman Era Hits Full Stride in South Bend: Can the Fighting Irish Win It All?

Notre Dame football enters a defining chapter in 2026. Coming off a 10-2 season and a missed playoff bid, head coach Head coach Marcus Freeman and company have National Championship aspirations. With offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock directing a high-powered scheme and defensive coordinator Chris Ash leading a reloaded defensive unit, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter the year as a legitimate title favorite.

A Poised, Full-Time Starter Under Center

The offense belongs to quarterback CJ Carr, who steps in as the full-time starter after logging 688 snaps, 2,741 passing yards, and 24 touchdowns a year ago. He shows a nice feel for scanning the field and limiting negative plays, and his ball placement on throws stands out as elite. Carr owns a 21-11 big-time-throw to turnover-worthy-play ratio, a mark that points to a quarterback who can push the ball down the field without living too dangerously.

A Backfield in Transition With Breakout Potential

After the Irish made NFL history by having two running backs, Jeremiyah Love (Arizona) and Jadarian Price (Seattle), getting drafted in the first round, most pundits would expect a drop-off with this position. However, it's still got talent. Aneyas Williams (9.3 yards per carry), Nolan James Jr. (2.6 yards per carry), and Kedren Young round out a running back group that will look very different after losing the stars. Williams brings game-breaking efficiency after posting 224 rushing yards and five touchdowns on just 24 carries a season ago. Four-star freshman Javian Osborne looks like a name to watch, with a real chance to carve out a larger role early alongside Williams as the primary weapons behind a physical offensive front.

A Deep and Explosive Receiving Corps

The wide receiver and tight end group might be one of the deepest units in the country. Leading target Jordan Faison returns after a 49-reception, 640-yard, four-touchdown season across 583 snaps. Ohio State transfer Mylan Graham and fellow Buckeyes transfer Quincy Porter bring lethal deep-threat potential. Add in Jaden Greathouse (18.3 yards per reception) and Micah Gilbert, and this pass-catching corps has relentless upside. At tight end, Arkansas transfer Ty Washington and five-star freshman Ian Premer give Denbrock physical options in the middle of the field.

An Offensive Line Built for Physical Control

Up front, Anthonie Knapp (688 snaps) anchors the tackle spot after showing elite run-blocking ability. Guerby Lambert (684 snaps) and Sullivan Absher (327 snaps) lock down the interior guard positions, while Joe Otting (380 snaps) handles the reps at center. Backup tackle Matty Augustine gives the group high-end pass protection off the bench. This line should be solid enough to keep Carr clean and establish physical control at the point of attack.

A Loaded Defensive Front

This defensive line group should be very solid. Edge rusher Boubacar Traore leads the charge after a monster 37-tackle, 10-tackle-for-loss, seven-sack season across 470 snaps. Bryce Young (two sacks, 314 snaps) and Alabama transfer Keon Keeley (three sacks) supply relentless edge pressure. On the interior, Pittsburgh transfer Francis Brewu (34 tackles, six tackles for loss in 484 snaps) anchors alongside Jason Onye (26 tackles, two sacks). The bigger question is whether Oregon transfer Tionne Gray can turn his 330-pound frame into consistent interior push for Chris Ash's front.

Linebackers Built Around Elite Returning Production

The linebacker group returns elite production. Senior Drayk Bowen commands the unit after putting up 67 tackles, five tackles for loss, and four sacks across 585 snaps. Alongside him, Jaiden Ausberry (51 tackles, two sacks in 437 snaps) and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (48 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks) provide athletic coverage and run-stopping bite. With Jaylen Sneed (35 tackles, three sacks) in the rotation, this core is as complete as any in college football.

A Top-Tier Secondary

The secondary should be a genuine strength. Outside corner Christian Gray (638 snaps, 10 pass breakups, two interceptions) leads a loaded corner room alongside Leonard Moore (632 snaps, seven pass breakups, five interceptions) and Colorado transfer DJ McKinney (597 snaps). At safety, Adon Shuler (52 tackles, two interceptions) and ball-hawking starter Tae Johnson (48 tackles, four interceptions) close gaps rapidly and limit explosive plays over the top.

Notre Dame's 2026 Schedule Gauntlet and Final Prediction

With elite continuity, a star quarterback in Carr, and high-end talent across every level of the defense, Notre Dame football is built to compete deep into December. Looking at the Notre Dame 2026 schedule, the Irish open with a Shamrock Series tilt against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field before hosting Rice and Michigan State, giving them a favorable three-game start. The trip to Purdue should be manageable, but the road test at North Carolina and a home date with Stanford both carry some risk before Notre Dame heads out to face BYU in Provo, a matchup that could genuinely go either way.

After the bye, the Irish get Navy at home before the season's toughest stretch: Miami, Boston College, and SMU over three straight weeks, sandwiched around a closing road trip to Syracuse. Miami and SMU both look like games decided on the margins. I expect Notre Dame to split that gauntlet, dropping one of the two while taking care of business elsewhere. That puts the Fighting Irish at 11-1 heading into the postseason, with a strong case for a top-four seed and a real shot at the College Football Playoff field come January.
