Day 12 has plenty of contenders on tap, and France facing Iraq from Philadelphia is right at the top of the list. Les Bleus looked excellent in their opener, as they beat Senegal 3-1 while Iraq was run over 4-1 by Norway. With France needing a win to all but lock up the knockouts and Iraq staring down elimination, the number I keep circling is France -2.5 in this matchup.

France Have Too Much Firepower
France opened the tournament with a convincing 3-1 win over Senegal. The opening minutes weren't particularly impressive, but once they settled in and established control, they looked like arguably the best team in the tournament. Kylian Mbappé scored twice and is now France's all-time leading World Cup scorer, which tells you exactly where the danger is coming from.
Their attacking quality is outstanding, and scoring three or more even against defenses far stronger than Iraq's looks very realistic. Over their last 10 matches, France have scored 26 goals and hit three or more on six occasions. With Didier Deschamps able to roll out Michael Olise, Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Désiré Doué, they certainly have the firepower to get to at least three here.
To be fair, France have not always been fully convincing defensively and have struggled to keep clean sheets. But if Norway can put four past this Iraq side, a France team of this caliber should be able to do the same and comfortably cover any goal they might concede at the other end.
Iraq Can't Stop Leaking
Iraq suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Norway in their opener. There were a few promising moments offensively, and Aymen Hussein at least got them on the board, but this is not a team I see scoring consistently in this tournament.
The bigger problem is at the back. Iraq's defensive instability is the real concern here. They often look nervous, and they tend to make costly mistakes under pressure. Against Norway, two major defensive errors led directly to goals. They are not the type of underdog that can sit deep and absorb pressure for 90 minutes, which is exactly what they'd need to do to keep this within two. It's hard to believe they suddenly find the organization to contain a team of France's quality.
The Setup
France need a win to effectively seal qualification with a game to spare; Iraq need a miracle just to stay alive. One side has elite firepower and every reason to keep their foot down, the other has shown a back line that cracks under the lightest pressure. France sit on three points with a +2 goal difference, Iraq on zero at -3, and the on-paper gap is mirrored by everything we saw on Matchday 1. When a top-three side this motivated meets a defense this fragile, the margin tends to get ugly.
