Arsenal begin the defence of their first title since 2004 at home to Coventry City on 21 August.
The 2026-27 Premier League kicks off on Friday 21 August and the questions are everywhere. Can Arsenal defend it? Does City survive life after Guardiola? Who is building and who is simply surviving? We have graded every club into four tiers.
Contenders
The clubs realistically fighting for the title and a top-four finish.
Arsenal
London · Emirates StadiumArsenal enter as defending champions after finally taking the title for the first time since 2004. Under Arteta they had finished second in three consecutive seasons before getting over the line, and they reached the Champions League final, losing to PSG on penalties.
The identity is clear. They are comfortable dominating possession, but the foundation is a solid defensive structure and an excellent set-piece attack. It is not always thrilling - they will grind out 1-0 wins against modest opposition - but it works, and there is no reason to expect a shift. The squad is deep enough for multiple fronts and saw minimal change over the summer, which is why they are favourites at around +150.
Manchester United
Manchester · Old TraffordUnited have struggled for a decade, changing coaches with little success since Ferguson's final title in 2012-13. That changed when Michael Carrick arrived as caretaker in January 2026 - the Red Devils averaged 2.29 points per game under him and beat the league's best on the way to the permanent job.
They sit fifth favourite at around +900. Oddly, the club has been quiet in the window so far, and as it stands the roster looks a step behind the league's best in top-end talent.
European hopefuls
Sides built to push for Europe and a strong upper-table campaign.
Aston Villa
Birmingham · Villa ParkVilla have blossomed under Emery, who took over in 2022 and turned them into one of the most stable sides in England - fourth last season, with the Europa League title alongside it. Villa Park remains one of the hardest away days in the division; under Emery they put together a 15-game winning run in 2023, their longest in 151 years.
They lost Rogers, Tielemans and Digne over the summer, but Manzambi and Joao Gomes give this team real potential. The question is the balance between domestic form and the Champions League. Watch Johan Manzambi - an outstanding World Cup before injury, and a likely Young Player of the Season nominee.

Nikola Lalic
Fresh off a 65-44, +21.85u (+20.65% ROI) World Cup run that included Rodri to win the Golden Ball (+430), the exact finalists (+1050), Norway to reach the quarter-finals (+225) and a 15-4 mark on both teams to score.
